What is Apple Mail Privacy Protection (AMPP)?

Apple Mail Privacy Protection (AMPP) is a privacy feature by Apple that limits how much senders know about email recipients’ activity. When contacts use Apple Mail on iPhone, iPad, or Mac with AMPP turned on, their email activity, such as when or if they open an email, is hidden from senders like BuzzStream users.

How AMPP Affects BuzzStream’s Open Tracking

BuzzStream’s open tracking usually works by placing a tiny, invisible image in your emails. When the email is opened, this image loads and lets BuzzStream know the email has been viewed. With AMPP, however:

  • Apple automatically "opens" emails as soon as they’re received, whether or not the recipient actually opens them.

  • This can lead to artificially high open rates and less reliable engagement tracking.

AMPP Filtering

To give you more accurate tracking, BuzzStream gives you the option to automatically exclude opens from contacts using AMPP. This means:

  • Open Rates Reflect Real Engagement: Opens tracked in BuzzStream won’t include automatic loads from AMPP users, giving you a more accurate view of engagement.

  • Enhanced Reporting Accuracy: You can rely more on open rates when reviewing engagement with contacts not using AMPP.

What You’ll See in BuzzStream with AMPP Filtering

With this feature:

  • Lower Open Rates for Apple Mail Users: Opens from Apple Mail users may be lower, as we’ll only count real opens where the email is likely viewed by the recipient.

  • More Reliable Data Across Campaigns: You'll get a clearer view of engagement and helps you better understand which recipients are actually interested.

Tips for Tracking Real Engagement

While AMPP filtering is one way to mitigate the issues of AMPP on open tracking, here are a few other ways to gauge engagement effectively:

  1. Focus on Link Clicks: Links clicked in your emails are a solid measure of engagement and aren’t affected by AMPP.

  2. Encourage Replies: Prompting contacts to reply gives you genuine engagement beyond open rates.

  3. Combine Metrics: Use a combination of clicks, replies, and opens to get a complete picture of engagement.

Summary

AMPP limits the accuracy of open tracking, especially with Apple Mail users. By focusing on other engagement metrics, you can still gain valuable insights and keep your outreach effective.
